Who wants to build a kantele?

If you are interested in this opportunity, send an email to lavesper@gmail.com

A kantele building and playing workshop is being planned for Ely! This workshop is a fantastic opportunity, so make plans to participate. The kantele which each participant will take home will be a simple and beautiful personalized work of art. Before we finalize details, we would like to gather some information about the people who are interested.

What is included?
• Materials and guidance for assembling a 10-string kantele
• Instruction in playing the kantele
• Specialized tools necessary for tuning and maintaining your instrument
• Lunch each day the workshop is in session

Who will teach the workshop?
Gerry Henkel will teach the building workshop. Gerry lives in Duluth and has built kanteles for over 20 years. He learned to build kanteles from the best builders in Finland. Please visit his website to learn more about him and his craft:

LynnAnne Vesper is organizing and assisting with teaching certain aspects of the workshop. She spent a year studying folk music in Finland where she built a 10-string kantele and learned to play it. lavesper@gmail.com or 218-235-8210

When? We plan to hold the workshop over the course of four days in late September or October 2010. The workshop will take place during the days, with a party and open house on the last evening.

Where? We are working with Camp DuNord to finalize a venue.

How much does it cost?
$200 per person, due September 1. The Donald G. Gardner Trust is supporting this workshop by covering associated costs over and above the participation fee.

For those coming from outside the Ely area, housing in a modern winterized cabin convenient to the workshop at the camp is available for a modest additional charge. (Contact LynnAnne for details.)

How do I register?
LynnAnne will send additional details in the coming weeks to everyone who has indicated interest.
